Keep Your Tires Healthy: How to Check Air Pressure Correctly

Maintaining proper tire air pressure is one of the simplest yet most important things you can do for your vehicle's health and safety. At Bolder Pixel, we understand that many of our customers want to take an active role in their tire care between our professional services. That's why we've put together this practical guide to help you check your tire pressure correctly and keep your tires in optimal condition.
Why Tire Pressure Matters
Underinflated or overinflated tires can lead to uneven wear, reduced fuel efficiency, and compromised handling. When you store your tires seasonally with us at Bolder Pixel, maintaining proper pressure during the off-season helps preserve their structural integrity and extends their lifespan. Whether you're preparing for our Installation & Rotation service or maintaining tires between your appointments, correct pressure is absolutely essential.
How to Check Your Tire Pressure
The process is straightforward and takes only a few minutes:
- Check the recommended pressure: Look inside your driver's door jamb for a sticker with your vehicle's tire pressure specifications. This is different from the maximum pressure listed on your tire sidewall itself.
- Use a reliable gauge: Invest in a quality tire pressure gauge—both digital and analog options work well and are affordable and easy to use.
- Check when tires are cold: For the most accurate reading, check pressure in the morning before driving or at least three hours after your vehicle has been parked, when tires haven't been heated by driving.
- Remove the valve cap: Unscrew the small cap on your tire's valve stem carefully.
- Press the gauge firmly: Apply the gauge firmly against the valve stem. You'll hear a slight hiss, which is completely normal.
- Read the pressure: The gauge will display your current pressure in PSI (pounds per square inch).
- Adjust if necessary: If pressure is low, visit a service station or bring your vehicle to us. If it's high, you can slowly release air by pressing the small pin inside the valve.
When to Check Your Pressure
We recommend checking tire pressure at least once a month and before long trips. Seasonal changes affect pressure too—cold weather typically lowers pressure, while hot weather increases it. This is especially important when preparing tires for seasonal storage with Bolder Pixel or after bringing stored tires back into use.
Professional Care Completes the Picture
While checking pressure yourself is valuable, ensuring your tires are in peak condition requires professional attention. Our Alignment & Replacement service can address wear issues that improper pressure may have caused.
